Book Review: Pigs have Wings

Undoubtedly one of the finest comic writers that the world has ever seen. There are no books written by P.G. Wodehouse that have a dull moment. I for one howl every time I turn over
a page of his books.  As Aristotle once said, “No great mind has existed without a touch of madness”. This completely applies to Wodehouse. One can say that his way of writing is pigs-have-wings-400x400-imadgudbpkuu3x2meccentric.

I was introduced to Wodehouse for the first time on my 10th birthday when a friend gifted me a Jeeves and Wooster novel. Intrigued I sat down to read it and within fifteen minutes I had tears in my eyes, not because I was sad, because Wodehouse’s comic timing was so perfect. His way of writing is very different too. Very English and very classy. It was the first time I had seen shorthand being used in writing a book. This is how I my love story with P.G. Wodehouse’s books began. Author to the Jeeves and Wooster series and Blandings Castle novels, Wodehouse has written around 103 books besides innumerous short stories, plays and humorous verses.

Pigs have Wings belongs to the Blandings Castle series. As the title suggests, the story revolves around Lord Emsworth’s (the owner of Blandings Castle) prize pig, the Empress of Blandings.  Don’t worry, there are no flying pigs. The speciality of the Empress of Blandings is that she is the fattest pig in all of Shropshire and has retained her title in the Fat Pig Contest at the Shropshire Agricultural Show for the past two years. But Lord Emsworth and his brother, the great Galahad Threepwood are worried that their neighbor and fellow pig owner, Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe will definitely create trouble for them. And he does, by bringing the Queen of Matchingham, another pig who could be the equal of the Empress of Blandings.

And thus begin the mysterious yet comic happenings at Blandings Castle. Not to forget Lord Emsworth’s nosey sister, Lady Constance Keeble who thinks her brother is just an old man going senile. Throw into the mix a love story, Maudie, the butler’s sister turned private detective and you have a best seller!
