Biopics are the ones which sing the medley of life journey covering the chronicle events of some really exceptional personalities. Needless to say, they attract the attention of the audiences as they promise to showcase the realistic drama and tragedies of famous people. Same is the case with ‘Azhar’ which has succeeded in creating a buzz within a week of its poster and teaser release.
Emraan Hashmi in the role of former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin manages to make an impression with his rugged look, making him an apt choice for this role. Not we say this, but it is an opinion of Azharuddin himself, he said, ““Emraan is very apt for the role. He has worked very hard. A lot of people asked me ‘Why Emraan is doing my role in the film?’ But Emraan is my favorite.” The cricketer firmly believes that this film will help Emraan to create his unique identity and he will be called Azhar after the film release. “I have watched almost all his films, and I think he is apt for the role. After this film, he will be called Azhar most of the times,” he added.
The life story of the cricketer has been full of upheavals, as he was, in 2000, accused of match-fixing; followed by a ban imposed by BCCI. Getting this stigma after achieving such a golden career was a bitter experience. But the cricketer never gave up and filed an appeal after which Andhra Pradesh High Court lifted the ban, but only in 2012 when it was nearly impossible to continue on the stadium. Reportedly, the cricketer was reluctant to allow the filmmakers to cast his story on silver screen due to such dark past. But, after director Anthony D`souza showed him the full script he finally gave them a green signal.
The film`s main essence are the three main aspects of Azhar’s life – “My God, My Marriage and match-fixing”. The cricketer contributed a lot to India`s cricket history, making his career graph bright. He played 99 tests contributing 6215 runs, and 334 ODIs making 9378 runs.
Also, the cricketer is known for his “unconventional style of playing the game”, mimicking which is quite a difficult job. Thus, Emraan has been practicing hard to achieve the perfections and guess what? Azharuddin himself is coaching Emraan about the various shades of the game. Talking about the same, actor said, “There were lots of challenges. One of them was Azhar’s style of playing cricket was very unconventional, and I had no footwork on that. So Azhar-bhai started training me for cricket. Then I realised that I have a lot to learn in cricket. Hopefully, I have become much better in the past three months.”
From the buzz that just the poster has generated, it seems difficult to predict what wonders will film do with its uncommon and atypical storyline. Produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and MSM Motion Pictures, Azhar’s shooting starts next month, with its release being scheduled for May next year.
