The Bandra by-polls were won by Shiv Sena on Wednesday, with its candidate Trupti Sawant winning over 1 Lakh votes, defeating veteran politician Narayan Rane of the Congress and Rahbar Khan of the MIM.
Sawant’s husband’s death had necessitated contest.
While the BJP ally won the Bandra (East) by-polls, the National Congress Party (NCP) won the Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal constituency of the Sangli district.
The widow of former MLA Prakash ‘Bala’ Sawant defeated Congress leader Narayan Rane with more than 19,000 votes.
In Mumbai, Bandra was an important constituency to win for the Sena as it houses the Chief Uddhav Thackeray’s residence ‘Matoshree’.
Narayan Rane, who lost the elections, faced humiliation after defeat, as he had also lost the State Assembly elections from his home, Sindhudurg district last year.
A total of 10 candidates stood in the Bandra polls and 9 candidates in the Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal elections.
The elections were held on April 11, 2015 for both the seats and results were announced today.
