The government in Pakistan has decided to be against the involvement of their military in the Saudi-led coalition fighting against the Houthi militants in the nation of Yemen, much after the days of countless number of debates on the issue.
Lawmakers and other officials voted unanimously in favour of a resolution that “Pakistan should maintain its neutrality” in Yemen. The nation of Saudi Arabia had asked Pakistan, an ally of its, to contribute in the making or supply of ships, aircrafts and troops to a military campaign it has launched against the Houthis besides monetary aid when required. Meanwhile, southern Yemen remained battered as airstrikes continued in the area.
The Saudi-led coalition, on the other hand, state that their aircrafts and other ammunitions have only targeted the camps of the militants, their air bases, weapons depots and rebel headquarters, but not the civilian areas, though they have often been hit as a result of the intense conflicts. Pakistan’s parliament began debating about its involvement on Monday and many lawmakers and persons having adequate knowledge about the same spoke out against sending their army to the nation.
Friday’s resolution said that the nation of Pakistan should play a mediating role or that of remaining neutral and backed the government’s commitment to protect Saudi territory, which has so far not been affected in the continuous conflicts.
Saudi Arabia and Yemen share a border and the region remains under constant threats that instability might spill into the Saudi Kingdom and adjacent not-yet-affected areas.
