Book Review: Lemon Girl

“I’ve got scratches all over my arms, one for each day since I fell apart.”-Jyoti Arora’s second novel is poignant and heart-wrenching. ’Lemon Girl’, as the name suggests, is not an alien or an eccentric character. She is our very own bubbly next-door Nirvi, who like all, had dared to dream. And Nirvi had not been spared. She, too, has been tabooed and ripped off the mainstream of life as a ‘victim’. The author’s scathing details lie open the biting truths of societal reality. It’s easier to mark sins, it’s hard to wipe them off. And Jyoti’s convincing narrative entertains, making it an obvious page-turner.

lemon-girlComprising of forty episodes, the novel is conversational. The story goes back and forth with the two protagonists, Nirvi and Arsh, alternating voices in the earlier episodes and the first person narrative makes it all the more cosy. Here Jyoti grabs the credits in her stride. Nirvi’s lemony gusto for life, her jolly good innocence being nipped by her blood-brother, her growing pulp of insanity grips you and leaves you ponder. Sometimes, there aren’t roads to escape. Nirvi has fallen. The story unwinds itself.

The novel adopts the stream-of-consciousness technique at places. Nirvi leaves her home, tried her hands in sexual relationships, craved for shelter and found one. Still Nirvi was never content with life. Meeting Tiya, believing Arsh, falling in love with Arsh, an intense yearning for self-respect: Nirvi was shown the doors of silence. A voiceless girl runs away stealing your favourite songs.

The language is lucid. Love is wait and the search might be endless at times. Jyoti’s novel is a deep insight into the psychological journey of a society called ‘MAN’, where rape becomes frequent and a merry-go-round happening. Jyoti condemns this sheer nonsense by penning down the pangs and misery of our very-own, Nirvi. Nirvi, who had once dared to trust. Now Nirvi travels, struggles and wonders at every tomorrow. The mystery continues.

Do we live?Is it all ‘my fault?’ Lets have a sip. ’Lemon Girl’ is here to keep u warm!

About Debanjan Chatterjee

It’s hard to pen one down in words. I love scribbling, even engage my bits in sketching doodles, make up limericks and end up laughing at myself. It’s hard to pen one down. So, imagine and imagine is just the beginning.
