It was really an emotional day for the Australian cricketers as they went out to play on the first day of the first test match against India at the Adelaide Oval this morning. There was a 63 seconds silence in the remembrance of Phil Hughes who passed away few days back after being hit on the back of the neck by a bouncer.
Coming into the match Australia made a perfect start after winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Much of the credit goes to David Warner alone who scored a brilliant 145 before getting out to debutant Karn Sharma. Also India had their moments early in the first session when they got the wickets of Chris Rogers (9) and Shane Watson (14). But Michael Clarke along with Warner steadied the ship for the home side. Clarke had to leave to the field unfortunately when he was batting well on 60. It was the back injury that forced him to leave the field and his frustrations were quite evident in his expressions.
Besides Warner and Clarke, Steve Smith also played a handy innings of 72. He is still at the crease as he saw Australia crumbling suddenly out of nowhere in the final session. Once Mitchell Marcs got out to Varun Aaron on 41, Nathan Lyon and Brad followed him in quick succession. It was a late comeback for India though when Mohammad Shami struck those 2 wickets late on the day. Otherwise it was mostly disappointing on behalf of India’s spearhead bowler. Ishant Sharma played his part as the only experienced person in the bowling line up as he bowled tight line and length without much luck though.
Australia ended the day on 354/6 as the match sits on a perfect balance right at the end of day 1. Australia’s prime target will be to pile on as many runs as possible on the second day and put India under pressure. On the other side, India will be looking forward to get the Australian wickets down and start well with the bat. It was an excellent start to one of the most promising series of the season. Let’s just keep an eye on that. It’s game on!
