The Congress government in Kerala has decided to shut down all liquor stores in the state and has planned to make Kerala alcohol-free in next 10 years.
“The UDF has come out with a unanimous decision for a liquor ban in the state to achieve total prohibition,” chief minister Oommen Chandy said after a two-hour long meeting at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.
The government has decided not to renew the licenses of 418 bars which were closed since April 1 and also 312 functioning bars will be closed down by March 31, 2015.
Only five star hotels will get the bar licenses to sell liquor.
Kerala is the top consumer of liquor ahead of Punjab in India and with the decision of banning liquor, the state would loss of Rs 8,000 crore per year.
