The distinguished jurists of India have agreed to back government’s effort to reform in judicial appointment process.
The Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had met with eminent jurists on Monday and discussed the proposed changes in the collegium system.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told reporters that “Noted jurists feel the collegium system of appointing judges has failed, needs to be changed.”
The proposed bill will have a six-member panel headed by the Chief Justice to take the final call on the appointment of judges.
Reacting to the development, Justice Katju said, “I agree that the collegium system has failed. I don’t know what happened in the meeting, but I’d said so earlier too.”
CNN-IBN quoted senior lawyer Majid Memon as saying, “The ball is set rolling to take a look at the matter of appointment and transfer of judges in the Supreme Court and High Court. This has been under experiment for a while. What Justice Katju has said is being considered for a long time by the people who are protesting. The judges should be free and should work fearlessly. They should be fearless of the government itself.”
