Spanning an area of 1412 sq.km this forest is a hub for the king of the jungle – Lion. Gir National Forest located in Gurajat, India came to being in 1965; the vision of Nawab of Junagadh has helped to protect the Asiatic lions.
The seven life-line rivers of Gir forest provide water to the forest and also the manmade reservoirs. It has the largest number of dry deciduous trees in western India. The forest is an adobe to about 2375 species of fauna, 2000 species of insects, 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and mammals.
The forest has gained significance as biological research area. It is also an educational and scientific centre for students. Lion counting and lion breeding programs are undertaken here and habits of the lions are observed and studied in their natural habitat.
The state encourages tourism by arranging lion safari, wildlife tour, bird watching and tribal-cultural tour. For adventure lovers, the forest is open throughout the year. Just pack your stuff, take a camera along and enjoy the ride.
