This open space of 317 sq. km was once upon a time used as jail for ‘prisoners of war’ by the Great Maratha Warrior – Shivaji Maharaj. Chandoli National Park located in Maharashtra, India has historical significance because of the presence of Bhavani Mata temple which signifies glory and victory.
With a mix of Malabar Coast forests and deciduous moist trees, the park spreads along the Sahyadri range of northern Western Ghats. Tigers, leopards, mammals, bisons, bears, different species of birds, amphibians and reptiles are inhabitants here. Different types of grasses like tangle grass, buffel grass, kangaroo grass, bluestem grass etc grow here. Insectivorous plants like sundew and bladderworts can also be found here.
A state board hydro-electricity project in the catchment area of Warna dam is expected soon. Tourists can also enjoy the Kandhardoh & Tanali waterfalls and the Vasant Sagar reservoir. The scenic Kokan-darshan can also be a part of the trip.
