Jim Corbett National Park

The first Tiger Reserve in India, Jim Corbett National Park is popular for its vast wildlife and wealth Flora-Fauna and is one of the favorites among wildlife enthusiast. Situated in the foothills of Himalaya’s in Dehradun with the lush green and uneven mountains, it has heights from 1400meters – 3000meters. It is mainly situated on the banks of river Ramganga and has a rich biodiversity. Jim Corbett Park has different habitat types like mountains, sal forests, chaurs, Khair-Sissoo forests and rivers.  Jim Corbett Park has exotic range of 25 species of Reptiles, 585 kinds of Birds and more than 50 varieties of mammals. There can also be spotted majestic leopards, elephants, deers, sambhars and chinkaras. To view this exotic range of animals go on an elephant safari or jeep safari and witness the best of species. Along with wildlife, Jim Corbett also has something store for adventure lovers. Many activities like rock-climbing, rappelling, river-crossing and slithering other than hot-air balloon and rafting.

Location: Situated in Uttrakhand in the foothills of Himalayas in Ramnagar district Nanital.

Best time to visit: Jim Corbett National Park opens for its visitors 3 times a year. In the Winter Season it is open from November to February, In Summer Season from March to June and in monsoon from June to September.

How to reach:

By Rail: Ramnagar Railway station is the nearest railhead to Jim Corbett Park which is 60kms away. Cabs & Taxis can be hired to reach the National park.

By Air: Patanagar airport is the nearest airport to Corbett National Park which is 50kms away from the Park. Cabs can be hired at an approximate price of Rs.100o to reach the National Park.

By Road: Various Uttrakhand State Transport Buses and Private Buses ply to Jim Corbett on daily basis.

Route from Delhi: Delhi – NH24 – Ghaziabad – Gadhmukteshwar – Gajraula – Mordabad Bypass – Uturn to left after 2nd toll- Kashipur – RamNagar – Corbett.

Permits:

One can buy Permits to Jim Corbett Park from their office in Ramnagar. Tickets can be obtained from the Park gate, but it is advisable to get the tickets from the office in Ramnagar as only limited vehicles are allowed inside the Park.

Places to visit:

Jim Corbett Park has been divided into four parts namelly Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna and Durga Devi. No trip to Jim Corbett is complete without a visit to these areas. If you want to increase the chances of seeing a Tiger, then a day or a two stay in Dhikala, located near Patil Dun Valley is a must. Once known as “Shooting Block” – Bijrani has diverse vegetation and has a drier terrain than Dhikala. Jhirna, on the other end is a densely wooded and grassland habitat which is home to sloth bears, wild elephants and growing tiger population. The entry point for the Lohachaur Guesthouse inside Corbett-Durga Devi runs along the hills and crosses the Ramganga River; the area is to be populated more with leopards & elephants.

Facilities of Guest House and camping are available inside the Park. Dhikala and Gairal are some of the areas having the best places to stay. There are other resorts, lodges, hotels outside the core park which are available for the tourist.

Travel Tips:

• Don’t walk around if you are not permitted to walk in that area.
• Avoid wearing perfumes and don’t smoke in restricted areas.
• Don’t make noises or play music or honk the car horn unnecessary.
• Carry personal medication and insect repellent.
• Wear clothes in the shades of brown or gree.
• Carry comfortable walking shoes
• Carry Binoculars, Cameras & Flashlights.
• In monsoon rain gear is essential.
• In summers carry light cotton clothes.
