The United States could take assistance from Iran to stop Sunni jihadis in Iraq.
Secretary of State John Kerry has indicated on Monday that Washington may go ahead seeking cooperation from Iran.
“I think we are open to any constructive process here that could minimize the violence, hold Iraq together — the integrity of the country — and eliminate the presence of outside terrorist forces that are ripping it apart,” John Kerry told Yahoo News.
On possibility of air strikes, John Kerry said, “They’re not the whole answer, but they may well be one of the options that are important.”
“When you have people murdering, assassinating in these mass massacres, you have to stop that. And you do what you need to do if you need to try to stop it from the air or otherwise,” he added.
Kerry’s comment came at a time when Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, has said that his country would consider working with United States in fight against the militants in Iraq.
The archrivals found themselves in curious position when both the nation is finding themselves in the same side of a coin in battling with Iraq. Both USA and Iran wants to stop the fall down of the current Baghdad government or any kind of civil war in Iraq. Now it is interesting that US is seeking help from the nation which they accuse of furnishing nuclear explosives to stabilize the region.
The Barack Obama administration is considering launching airstrikes against the Sunni Arab militia which has claimed to capture many cities in Iraq’s north and west.
“We’re not talking about coordinating any military action in Iraq with Iran. We would encourage Iran to push the Iraqis to act to address problems in a nonsectarian way,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
A senior Iranian official, however, told Reuters that there are no question of military cooperation.
“Iran is a great country that can play a key role in restoring stability in Iraq and the region,” he said adding, “Military cooperation was not discussed and is not an option.”
