The Congress has demanded the resignation of Union minister of state for chemicals and fertilizer Nihal Chand Meghwal following a district court in Jaipur issued a notice to him in connection with a 2011 rape case.
“After Narendra Modi’s speech, today is testing time for him. It is a serious issue and the PM must immediately dismiss him. All the talks about austerity and transparency, they must think about it,” said Congress leader Sachin Pilot.
Meghwal was named in FIR by the woman in 2011 alleging that her husband drugged her and then allowed his friends including Meghwal to rape her. However, the Rajasthan police had closed the case a year later saying the charges were false and fabricated. The woman then challenged the police report in court. The court has asked all accused including Meghwal to respond by August 20.
Defending Meghwal, BJP spokesperson Siddharth Nath Singh said, “In December 2012, the police which was under the Gehlot government had filed a final report and a closure report. The same was accepted by the metropolitan magistrate in February 2014. Now, that’s the fact of the case. If there is anything further, it will be replied according to law.”
