India’s largest e-commerce portal Flipkart is planning to hire 12000 employees in the financial year 2014-15 to compete with other major domestic online retailers like Amazon and Snapdeal.
“Our focus on hiring is going to be pretty aggressive as we are looking to increase our current team strength from 13,000 to 25,000, by the end of current fiscal,” said Mekin Maheshwari, Flipkart’s chief people officer.
“In engineering alone, we plan to hire 1,200 people to create a strong team by the end of 2014,” added Maheshwari.
Flipkart has crossed $1-billion (5,920 crore approx) sales last year and is currently in news for its acquiring of major online fashion retailer Myntra last month.
Large hiring plans are not so uncommon in Indian ecommerce market. In fact, it is one of the major contributors to overall job creations in the country at the moment. Recently Snapdeal has announced that it will hire 1300 employees in coming months to keep up the competition.
“To stand against the growing competition, we plan to double our headcount. We plan to add 1,300 people more to the current headcount of about 1,300 people,” said Saurabh Nigam, VP, human resource, Snapdeal.com.
One interesting trend has been emerging from the recent recruitment policies of these domestic online retailers. Most e-commerce companies are looking forward to hire from IITs and IIMs. Flipkart has even said that they are preparing to enroll alumni of Harvard and Stanford’s management batch of 2015 to give strategic push.
