Sumitra Mahajan becomes the first BJP member and second ever woman to be elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The eight-time BJP MP from Indore was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha on Friday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sumitra Mahajan for her election. He moved the motion which was seconded by L K Advani.
“It is a matter of pride for all of us that a woman is at the helm of the temple of world’s largest democracy and we hope that her guidance would help us in the smooth conduct of the House,” Modi said.
Quoting a Sanskrit line, “Mahajano yena gatasya panth”, Modi said, “We now have a ‘Mahajan’ (great person) presiding over the House and what could be more appropriate?” “In your name it is inherent you will have friendly and cordial relations with everyone,” he said.
The 71-year-old Mahajan is highly respected figure in the parliament across party line. She is also the longest-serving woman MP in the country.
Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and other party leaders also congratulates the newly elected Speaker.
