Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in New Delhi on Monday.
Confirming the news PML-N Spokesperson Siddiq Al Farooq said, “On the invitation of Prime Minister designate, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will make a day long visit to New Delhi.”
Prime Minister Sharif’s adviser Tariq Azim said, that Pakistan wants to revive bilateral talk.
“We feel that too much has been said and too much apprehension has been showed towards the Indian PM. He has got the mandate and we believe that we can work with anyone who is elected as the leader,” he said.
Pakistan also hopes to hava one-on-one talk with Modi after the swearing-in ceremony.
“The Prime Minister will be in India for a day only. Though we are hoping that it will be more than a photo opportunity. It will be more than just a handshake,” Azim said.
The BJP has welcomed Pakistan’s decision to attend the oath ceremony.
In a blog senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley wrote, “This is a big occasion for India’s democracy that the country’s elections have concluded peacefully and the world’s largest democracy sees such a change. Such a peaceful change in the world’s largest democracy is an occasion to showcase to the whole world the strength of democracy.”
Meanwhile in a goodwill gesture Pakistan will release 150 arrested fisherman ahead of Pak PM’s visit to India.
Along with Pakistan PM, Pakistan foreign minister Sartaz Aziz will also attend the ceremony. Sharif’s daughter, Maryam Nawaz Sharif who will also accompanying him has backed close ties between the two countries.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed Pakistan’s decision to attend the ceremony.
“Very glad to hear Pak PM has accepted invite, shows that he can prevail over forces inimical to good relations with India,” Omar twitted adding, “I hope that this will mark a new beginning in ties between our two countries. The people of J&K will be watching closely.”
In an unprecedented move, Narendra Modi has invited all SAARC leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony on May 26.
Sri Lankan President President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have already confirmed that they will attend the ceremony. Bangladesh Parliament speaker will also come to the occasion.
