Congress Work committee on Monday has resigned party President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s offer to resign from their post following the party’s poll debacle 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Senior Congress leader Amrinder Singh said, “Sonia and Rahul offered to resign, but the Congress Working Committee unanimously rejected it.”
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also said resignation won’t solve the issue and took responsibility for Congress’ defeat in the polls.
“Resignation is not the solution, mistakes need to be corrected,” he said adding, “I take responsibility of the loss of this defeat as far as government functioning is concerned.”
Congress leader Janardhan Dwivedi said, “Sonia Gandhi and Rahul resigning is not the solution.”
“Rivals polarised the electorate. Results were extremely disappointing and we were defeated despite doing good work,” Dwivedi told media.
Party leaders like Manish Tewari and Renuka Chowdhury also said there is no need to Gandhis to resign.
“The question of Sonia and Rahul resigning does not even arise. It’s a collective responsibility. I am equally responsible,” Manish Tewari said.
“There is no question of us evaluating Rahul Gandhi. We have to hit the ground as we have Assembly elections coming in six months. We have to get our act together and have to deliver,” Renuka Chowdhury said.
Congress won 44 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha Polls. It was their worst performance since independence.
