Once it was a Bastian for Congress, but now it’s all set to become a nightmare for the grand old party.
If municipal poll are indications and exit polls are predictions, then Congress is going to regret for its decision to bifurcate the state of Andhra Pradesh in hurry and blame itself for mishandling the sensitivity of the issue.
In local bodies – municipalities and city corporations results in Seemandhra, it is clear that Congress faced people’s anger in the region and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has gained significantly. If the trend continues then it is almost certain that Chandrababu Naidu will be back in the power after almost a decade later. TDP emerges as the single largest party in the state in these local level polls, bagging 64 of the total 92 municipalities, while Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress won in 23 municipals just ahead of state Assembly and Lok Sabha poll results which to be declared on 16 May.
Chandrababu Naidu expressed his gratitude and happiness after the poll results and said he is confident that the voters will also choose TDP in the Lok Sabha and state elections.
“The Municipal & Corporation election results show TDP’s victory has mirrored peoples’ confidence towards development & effective governance,” tweeted Mr Naidu.
Congress’s performance is not unexpected, however the intensity in which the people have voted against the party is indeed scaring for them. Andhra always stood by Gandhis. The un-divided state was even voted for Congress during emergencies. However, it is significant that they are losing ground heavily and quickly and they may have to pay huge price for angering the loyalists in coming days too.
Telangana however gave some breather to Congress as it has won 22 out of total municipalities out of total 53. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) which claims credit to form the new Telangana state have won only 11 municipal seats. Telangana voters have not given any clear majority to any parties and it seems Congress have failed to exploit its advantages and not received any benefit for creating the statehood just like K Chandrasekhar Rao’s TRS.
TDP has won just three municipalities in Telangana region while a new force BJP bagged two municipalities.
