Former Barcelona manger Tito Vilanova breathed his last yesterday night after failing to keep the fight on in a long-drawn battle with cancer. He was ailing with a recurring tumour in the saliva gland which forced him to step down as Barcelona manager at the end of last season. Tito, who was 
admitted to a hospital in Barcelona previous week, underwent an emergency surgery on Thursday only to pass away on the next day.
Barcelona, in a statement on their website, said, “It is with sadness that Barcelona must announce that Freancesc ‘Tito’ Vilanova has died today at the age of 45. The death of our former coach occurred this afternoon when he could not overcome this disease which he had battled since 2011.”
Vilanova was at first an assistant to Pep Guardiola in the Barcelona team. After that when Pep left, he became the manager of the team which he led to a La Liga title with a record-tying 100 points.
As a young player he trained at Barcelona’s training camp but failed to make it to the first team. As a footballer he played for clubs like Celta Vigo and Mallorca before he had to call it a day on the field due to a serious knee injury. Then he joined coaching and had players like Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, and Lionel Messi tutored under him.
The former Barcelona manager is survived by his wife, Montse Chaure and two children. Adrian, his son, currently trains in the youth academy of Barcelona.
