Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday has rubbished the news reports that claimed she wanted to fight against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in Varanasi but was stopped by Congress high command.
The Times of India has written this morning that that Priyanka was keen to contest against Modi in Varanasi as she believed Modi was ‘bad for the country’ but her wish was not endorsed by senior party leaders including her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul.
“Priyanka Gandhi is reliably learned to have been very keen to be the Congress candidate in the holy city. But the party leadership finally decided against fielding her,” the report said.
The report also claimed that because of the decision on Priyanka’s candidature against Modi, Congress took time to announce of its Varanasi nominee.
“One of the reasons the Congress delayed naming a candidate for Varanasi was because it was weighing the possibility of naming Priyanka. But the actual decision against fielding her was taken some days before Tuesday’s announcement of local MLA Ajay Rai as candidate for the Congress,” the report said.
Priyanka who is currently busy campaigning for her mother Sonia and brother Rahul in their constituencies Rae Bareli and Amethi has denied such report.
Priyanka told reporters that her main focus are in Amethi and Rae Bareli and she has no desire to fight elections.
“I have always said my focus is on the two seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli and that remains the case,” Priyanka said, adding, “No one in my family would ever stop me from contesting elections if I wanted…My brother, mother and husband would wholeheartedly support me if I ever wanted to,” Priyanka added.
“This is entirely my own personal decision and I will change it only when I feel from within me that I should,” said Priyanka.
