It could just be the beginning of the end of an era in English football. An era dominated by the Red Devils. It might have just been initiated by the biggest rival in their history.
Liverpool simply crushed the 6th placed Manchester United side at their own backyard 3-0 to climb up to the 2nd spot in the English Premier League table. A couple of penalties in either half by Steven Gerrard and a late goal from Luis Suarez saw the 20-time champions losing for the 5th time in the season at Old Trafford. It could have been even worse had Gerrard not missed a golden opportunity to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford hitting the third penalty of the day against the post which was given wrongly after Sturridge had dived clearly to a Nemanja Vidic challenge. Vidic’s sending off due to that challenge was the only time when referee Mark Clattenburg made a mistake on the pitch in such a high voltage match.
However, had the decision been reversed, there would have hardly been in change in the fortunes of Manchester United as they played simply some poor football in the middle. And Liverpool with their young line-up well supported by the experience of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez just hammered United controlling the match right from the kick-off.
Now with this defeat United’s chosen one, David Moyes, faces an uphill task of restoring the morals of each and every players in the team. They have one more big game in their hand, perhaps the final chance to grab anything in this season, when they face Olympiakos at Old Trafford on Wednesday in which they trail by 2 goals. But as of now it seems all but over for United in the race for the final Champions League qualification spot in the table.
On the other hand Liverpool is slowly making their presence felt in the title race as they are now placed 2nd in the table trailing Chelsea by 4 points only with 1 game in hand. This could just be the beginning of the age of revival for the Merseysiders.
