In its biggest deal ever, Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for whooping $19 billion in cash and stock.
Facebook is paying $12 billion stock and $4 billion in cash for WhatsApp. Also in addition to that Facebook will provide restricted stock worth $3 billion to all its founders and employees at WhatsApp’s.
With this move Facebook surpassed earlier records of Google, Microsoft and Apple’s biggest and largest acquisition in the history. When Google bought Motorola Mobility it paid $12.5 billion; and Microsoft spent $8.5 billion for Skype; However, Apple has never gone beyond $1 billion deal while acquiring a company.
Announcing the news, Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “I’m excited to announce that we’ve agreed to acquire WhatsApp and that their entire team will be joining us at Facebook.
Our mission is to make the world more open and connected. We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day.”
