Mumbai Police has detained Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray along with some party members on Wednesday in Chembur while he was leading a protest on street against toll tax in Maharashtra.
“Raj Thackeray has been detained. Police stations across Mumbai were instructed to ensure no untoward incident takes place. All officers were asked to handle this case firmly,” acting Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Hemant Nagrale said.
MNS has been protesting since morning in front of the toll plazas across the state and many roads have been blocked.
Reacting to the violent protest Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said government is addressing the issue and there is no need for vandalism.
“Raj Thackeray had sought time. I had given him time for talks. There is no need to indulge in vandalism. He wants to politicise the issue in an election year. Discussions are on on a new toll policy,” Prithviraj Chavan said.
Raj Thackeray meanwhile asked public to join the protest.
“I want the people to come to the streets and join our agitation. This is not my issue. It is the issue of the people of Maharashtra,” Thackeray said.
“The government says it is open to talks but that’s not enough. I want a time bound programme,” he added.
