Cameron visits Jaffna

Despite Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse warning, British Prime Minster David Cameron visited war-hit Jaffna on Friday, shortly after the Commonwealth summit began in Colombo.

David-Cameron visits JaffnaDavid Cameron became the first foreign national head to visit Jaffna since its independence in 1948.

“I’m the first PM or President to go to the north of Sri Lanka since 1948. I want to shine a light on chilling events there first hand,” he said on Twitter.

Cameron visited northern Jaffna region where almost 100,000 Tamil people died in fighting with Sinhalese government. He met victims and survivors of the 37-year-old bloodiest civil war.

After refusing of an independent investigation into the war crime against the Tamils and violations of human rights, Sri Lanka has been receiving subbing from various countries across the globe.

After the leaders of Canada and Mauritius refused to come to the meet, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also has boycotted the summit.

David Cameron has, however, said that he wants to attend the summit to keep the spotlight on the troubles of war victims in Sri Lanka.

“If the Commonwealth is to remain relevant to its member countries, the association must respond to the needs of its people and not turn into a punitive or judgemental body,” he said.

About Sprightly Spirit

“I dare do all that may become a man. Who dares more is none”. And all, may be. It may be the vigor. Or the spirit. Or the courage to avoid being “politically correct” or bent. And, ban all averse with immaculate overture of graciously fathomable words firm in views. Subtle. Justifying the undying conscience. Values. Knowledge. And, dares to stay true. True to own. True to the world. And, to the words. With a dream in eyes it exists. In you. In me. In all. The sprite that never shies away. The spirit that never dies!
