Hockey India (HI) has appointed Terry Walsh as the chief coach of the men’s national team of India. Walsh has been a part of the Australian national team in three Olympics. He began his coaching career as the chief coach of the Malaysian national team in 1990. He continued his job there for 4 years before he took the responsibility of the Australian national team in 1997. Under him Australia triumphed in the Commonwealth games in 2008 and emerged victorious in the Champions Trophy 1999. Australia also managed to grab a bronze medal in the Olympics in 2000.
Narinder Batra, secretary general of the HI, remarked that appointing Walsh as the head coach is a great step towards bringing back the lost glory of Indian hockey. He said, “Walsh will provide the adequate guidance and motivation to the team. He not only has the experience but also has a vision to develop senior men’s hockey team as a well-knit professional unit”.
Walsh who is ready to take up the new challenge said, “The opportunity to head the Indian team is extremely humbling. Coaching India must be regarded as the greatest challenge in the hockey world.” Referring to the past history of India in this sport Walsh added, “The world’s richest history in our sport combined with the great passion of Indian hockey sets an incredible platform for excitement, but also expectations in this country… I look forward to working with players, the coaching staff, Hockey India and the Sports Authority of India in ensuring no stone is left unturned with India’s quest to return to the performance pinnacle of world hockey”.
The appointment of Walsh as India’s coach looks like a promising one. With number of big tournaments including the FIH Men’s World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games coming within next few months, India will look forward to prove their mettle on the field with their new coach.
