Nobel prize for medicine announced

Two Americans and one German have won this year’s Nobel Prize in medicine for their findings on how hormones, enzymes and other key substances are distributed and transported into cells.

The Nobel committee in Stockholm announced  on Monday that James E. Rothman (62) of Yale University; Randy W. Schekman (64) of the University of California and Dr. Thomas C. Südhof (57) of Stanford University have been chosen as the winners of 2013 Nobel Prize in medicine.

“These discoveries have had a major impact on our understanding of how cargo is delivered with timing and precision within and outside the cell,” the committee said.

In a statement Schekman said, “My first reaction was, “Oh, my God! That was also my second reaction.”
