In its landmark judgment today Bangladesh High Court cancelled registration of country’s largest right-wing party Jamaat-e-Islami and bars it from contesting in elections in future.
The three member bench comprising justice M Moazzam Husain, justice M Enayetur Rahim and justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque pronounced the judgement. The writ petition of cancelling Jamaat’s license was filed in 2009 alleging that Jamaat-e-Islami was a religion-based political party and it did not believe in independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh.
The demand of Banning Jamaat-e-Islami is growing in Bangladesh and it is blamed for war crimes during the 1971 freedom war against Pakistan.
