Congress led UPA on Tuesday gave green signal to create separate state of Telangana. Consisting of 10 districts, Telengana will be India’s 29th state. Hyderabad will serve as a joint capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telegana for next 10 years.
Telegana has population over 3.5 crore and has 17 Lok Sabha seats and 119 assembly seats.
The decision came after series of meeting between top Congress leadership, Andhra Chief Minister and Congress High command in Delhi. Congress Working Committee finally agreed to form the state. UPA allies also gave unanimous support in creating the new state.
“It is resolved to request the Central government to take steps in accordance with the Constitution to form a separate state of Telangana ……within a definite timeframe,” CWC resolution said.
The 10 districts which included in Telengana are: Hyderabad, Medak, Adilabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy and Warangal.
“We have kept in mind security, water issues, liabilities, etc. All this will be considered while drafting the Bill. Modalities will be worked out for division of assets, liabilities and water resources.. The formation of Telangana cannot be compared to demand from states. Telangana will have 10 districts. In Hyderabad, there is adequate arrangement for both states to run their affairs for next 10 years,” Congress General Secretary and Andhra Pradesh in-charge Digvijaya Singh said.
“It was not an easy decision, we appeal to people to cooperate,” said Ajay Maken, spokesman of the Congress party.
“Today we pay our respects to all those who struggled and gave their lives for a new state of Telangana. This is a victory of people’s power! Instead of facing the people of AP all these years, Congress hid behind committees and reports. Will they apologize to people of AP for this?” Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said.
TRS leader KT Rama Rao welcomes government decision.
“The CWC clearing Telangana is a welcome decision. We will wait for the Bill to be passed in Parliament. Hyderabad can be an interim capital,” he said.
