Renowned Carnatic violinist, vocalist and composer Lalgudi Jayaraman passed away in Chennai on Monday. He was 82. He is survived by wife and two musician children Lalgudi G.J.R.Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.
Lalgudi Jayaraman was born on September 17, 1930 at Lalgudi in Tiruchi district of Tamil Nadu. He started learning music under the guidance of his father Lalgudi Gopala Iyer. His first concert was held in 1942 at the age of 12.
Lalgudi Jayaraman took Carnatic music to new heights. He was conferred with ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in 1972 and with the Padma Bhushan in 2001. He won the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for the film Sringaram in 2006. In 2010, Jayaraman became a fellow of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. He refused to accept the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy. Later Music Academy honoured him with a special lifetime achievement award. He also received honorary
