EU cautions India over restraining Italian ambassador

The European Union has warned India over its temporary ban on Italian ambassador from leaving the country on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court of India has bar Italian envoy Daniele Mancini from leaving the country till 2nd April for breaching an undertaking given to the court over two Italian marines who are charged with murdering Indian fishermen.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton said that India cannot violate Vienna Convention for diplomatic relations and has no authority to restrain the Italian ambassador from leaving India.

“Any limitations to the freedom of movement of the ambassador of Italy to India would be contrary to the international obligations established under this convention,” Ashton said in a statement.

“…continues to hope that a mutually acceptable solution can be found through dialogue and in respect of international rules and encourages the parties to explore all avenues to that effect,” Ashton added.

Daniele Mancini given a personal guarantee on behalf of the Italian government for releasing two marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone for 4 weeks to go to Italy and cast their votes in the general election. However last week Italian government revolts its decision and said they will not return the marines to India to face the trail.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice A R Dave and Justice Vikramajit Sen said that the Ambassador had lost trust of the court and he would not leave the country. A contempt of court charge would be issued if the ambassador fails to return back two marines by March 22.
