BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Sunday demanded resignation from Markandey Katju, the chairman of Press Council of India. Jaitley accused Katju of ‘bias’ and said a person holding a post has to be impartial.
Pointing out at the recent statements from Katju on Bihar, Gujarat and West Bengal government, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said, that Katju always attacked the non-Congress governments and remain silent on Congress ruled state, because of “his political preferences”.
Jaitley said that a judge should keep some distance from political controversies.
“Though initially known for his scholarship, Justice Katju was never a conventional judge. His utterances, both during his tenure as a judge and thereafter, are clearly outlandish,” Jaitley said. “The chairman of the press council discharges a statutory job. His job requires fairness, impartiality and political neutrality. Additionally, a judge, whether sitting or retired, is expected to conduct himself with sobriety, dignity and grace. He cannot be loud, crude, outlandish or behave like a megalomaniac,” he added.
